WHERE WE SUPPORT

Design is where the built environment begins. Before a structure is built, it is conceived —
by architects, engineers, planners, and specialist consultants whose thinking determines
what the built environment becomes. These are the people and businesses we work with
across the Design discipline. Design practices in the built environment range from global
consultancies with thousands of engineers to boutique architectural studios with twenty
people. The hiring challenge is different at each scale — and different again depending on
the vertical. We know these distinctions.

CASE STUDY
PRINCIPAL URBAN PLANNER

CLIENT European Consultancy
LOCATION North Asia
VERTICAL Urban

A European urban planning consultancy required a Principal Urban Planner with strong knowledge of the contemporary Asian landscape — specifically the ability to integrate road and rail transportation with commuter facilities within a complex interchange environment. A Singaporean profile was requested to bring fresh perspective to the high-density urban conditions the project demanded.

The mandate was completed within five months. In addition to the primary placement, Bayes identified and proposed a complementary senior team member from the local workforce — extending the scope of the original brief at no additional cost to the client.

The brief met — and exceeded.

  • CLIENT Engineering Consultancy for Nordic Chemical Major
    LOCATION Singapore + SEA
    VERTICAL Industrials

A specialist process engineering consultancy engaged Bayes to identify a Senior Process Engineer to support the front-end engineering design of a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility for a global life sciences client. The role required expertise in pharmaceutical process design, GMP compliance, and the ability to lead client-facing technical workshops with a demanding and technically sophisticated client team.

The constraint was specific. The consultancy required a candidate with direct experience of pharmaceutical API manufacturing processes — not generalist process engineering — and with the presentation and client management capability to operate effectively in a consulting environment rather than an operator environment. The two profiles rarely coexist in the same candidate.

Bayes identified a candidate who had spent the first decade of their career in pharmaceutical operations before transitioning to a consultancy role, bringing both the process knowledge and the consulting discipline the mandate required. The placement was completed within ten weeks.

Operator knowledge. Consulting capability. Both in one appointment. Found by Bayes.

  • CLIENT Engineering Consultancy for Utilities and Municipal Major
    LOCATION Jakarta, Indonesia
    DISCIPLINE Infrastructure

An international engineering consultancy under its environmental arm engaged Bayes to identify an Infrastructure Planning Lead to head its Jakarta team — a role that combined technical leadership on water infrastructure and urban drainage masterplanning projects with the business development responsibilities of growing the consultancy's presence in the Indonesian market.

The dual mandate — technical delivery and business development simultaneously — produced a candidate profile that was both specific and uncommon. Senior infrastructure planners with the technical depth required for complex drainage and water infrastructure work rarely carry the market relationships and commercial orientation that business development in a new geography demands.

Bayes identified a candidate who had led water infrastructure masterplanning programmes across Southeast Asia, had established relationships with the government agencies and development institutions that represented the primary client base in Indonesia, and was actively considering a move that would give them the market leadership opportunity the role offered. The appointment was made within twelve weeks.

Technical authority. Market relationships. The platform to build. Found by Bayes.

  • CLIENT Architectural Practice
    LOCATION Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
    VERTICAL Urban

A regional architectural practice with studios across Southeast Asia required a Design Director to lead its Kuala Lumpur office — a role that combined creative leadership on a portfolio of high-rise residential and mixed-use projects with the operational responsibility of managing a studio of twenty-two architects and designers.

The dual nature of the role — design leadership and studio management simultaneously — produced a narrow candidate profile. Practitioners of sufficient creative seniority frequently lacked the operational experience the studio required. Those with strong management track records were, in some cases, no longer operating at the design leadership level the portfolio demanded.

Bayes identified a candidate who had spent the preceding eight years in a comparable role at an international practice, had led the design of three significant high-rise residential towers in the Klang Valley, and was at a point in their career where the autonomy of a studio directorship was precisely the right next move. The appointment was made within three months.

Design leadership and studio capability. Both present. Both required. Found by Bayes.

Urban Development and the Workforce Conditions of Asia's Next Decade

Asia's cities are being built faster than at any point in modern history. The scale of urban development underway across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the broader Asia Pacific — the residential programmes, the transit infrastructure, the commercial and mixed-use development that follows population growth and economic expansion — is generating a built environment demand that will define the region's physical form for the next generation.
